How It All Started
The idea for MishiPay originated when Mustafa Khanwala, CEO and Founder, waited in a queue at a supermarket for 20 minutes in the summer of 2015 to buy a single can of soda. Frustrated, he thought there must be a better way to do this, for both stores and their customers. And thus, the journey began...
2015
The first MishiPay prototype was created, followed by Tanvi Bhardwaj, Mustafa’s best friend, joining MishiPay as Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer. Soon after, we won our first deployment at ‘The Dandy Lab’ in London.
In early 2016 we moved to a new home at IDEALondon, a post-accelerator centre run by Cisco, UCL Engineering and EDF Energy. By the summer we had won our first commercial deal, deploying at the Deloitte Store of the Future in London and secured our first external investment from Manchester University and UCL.
2017
After closing our pre-seed funding round we began deployments across the globe in demonstration stores and built strategic partnerships with Cisco, Avery Dennison, Echangeur BNP Paribas and Weshop Germany.
After beginning the year by successfully raising over £2m in seed funding from the likes of Nauta Capital and Commerce Ventures, MishiPay launched with leading French DIY retailer Leroy Merlin. This was followed by the creation of Saturn Express; Europe’s first cashier-less store in Innsbruck, Austria. Over 30,000 users visited the store. We ended the year by deploying with leading fashion retailer Mango in stores in London and Barcelona and with Saturn in Hamburg; the world’s largest consumer electronics store.
In February 2019 both Mustafa and Tanvi were named on the prestigious Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ list, and shortly after we reached a proud milestone; our first national rollout with Decathlon Netherlands. We closed the year by securing £3.5m in our Series A funding round, with investment from American Express, United Ventures and Nauta Capital, and claimed the Institut du Commerce Connecté Startup Of The Year award.
2020
Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, we rolled out our technology with prestigious retailers across Europe including MUJI and Decathlon Deutschland and also launched with SPAR, Londis, Eroski and Dufry. Our team had now grown to more than 40, with offices in London, Bangalore and Dallas.
By the beginning of 2021, MishiPay was live in hundreds of stores across 13 countries, following our deployment with Flying Tiger Copenhagen in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. This soon became 14 when we launched our technology with Paradies Lagardere in the United States, and in the autumn we expanded our deployment with Flying Tiger Copenhagen to their London stores.
2022 saw the ongoing expansion of our deployment with Paradies Lagardere, bringing our technology to shoppers in more than 30 airports all over North America. We launched with Virgin Megastore, our first client in Dubai, and this was closely followed by more launches in the Middle East. We also introduced the MishiPay self-checkout kiosk with Flying Tiger Copenhagen and MUJI in London stores, transforming the stores to 100% automation run on MishiPay software.
In 2023 MishiPay continued signing new clients but also expanding with the existing ones. Flying Tiger deployed the MishiPay self checkout kiosk across all UK stores. MishiPay introduced the third product, the MishiPay cash desk, which also went live across the Flying Tiger UK stores. Moreover, MishiPay expanded in Dubai by launching self checkout kiosks and scan & go with Dubai Duty Free and Grandiose super markets. In the US, MishiPay expanded with Event network (across Georgia Aquarium and multiple other locations) and introduced an RFID scan & go and kiosk journey with Carters.
