THE SPARK

UCL engineering student Mustafa Khanwala waits 20 minutes in a supermarket queue to buy a single can of soda. Frustrated by the experience, he envisions a better way for both shops and shoppers. Mustafa creates the first prototype of Scan & go.

2016
First Steps

MishiPay pilots its Scan, Pay and Go mobile app with RFID loss prevention at The Dandy Lab, a pop-up in Shoreditch, London. It works!

2017
Building TRUST

The company joins the IDEA London accelerator and receives external funding from University of Manchester and UCL. MishiPay wins its first commercial deal at Deloitte’s ‘Store of the Future’ in London and receives the Mayor of London award.

2018
BREAKTRHOUGH

MishiPay Scan & Go goes live at Saturn Express in Innsbruck, Austria and later in Saturn in Hamburg – the world’s largest consumer electronics retailer. Nauta Capital and Commerce ventures become a few of the first big investors in MishiPay.

2019
INDUSTRY RECOGNITION

The first large scale rollout of Scan & Go starts with Decathlon in the Netherlands. Mishipay closes their Series A funding round with American Express Ventures. Founder Mustafa Khanwala and co-founder, Tanvi Bhardwaj are named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list.

2020 - 2022
NAVIGATING THE STORM

A global pandemic severly affects in-store retail. We doubled down on solutions to help stores stay open with reduced costs, signing MUJI and Flying Tiger Copenhagen in the UK for our Scan, Pay and Go to all their stores in London.

2022
BEYOND MOBILE

We launched MishiPay Self-Checkout Kiosks – an evolution that would redefine our business. The kiosks solved the final barrier to mass adoption – customer adoption. This bold pivot from mobile-only to our omnichannel platform set the stage for explosive growth and international expansion. MishiPay kiosks were deployed in flagship stores in the UK and the USA and since then we have never looked back.

2022 - 2024
EXPLOSIVE GROWTH

The launch of MishiPay Kiosks followed by mPOS while maintaining our core of mobile first cloud native technology from our legacy of Scan, Pay and Go, led to an explosive growth in stores across the UK, Europe and North America. In December 2024, >2% of the UK population shopped using MishiPay. We then launched in the Middle East and secured our first anchor customer. MishiPay kiosks and mpos were live in one of the busiest airports in the world in Dubai. We raised more expansion capital to support this growth.

Mustafa is a accomplished Mechatronic Engineer with an impressive track record of innovation and leadership across diverse industries. He has successfully worked with and led projects at prestigious companies including Porsche, National Instruments, Barclays, and TATA, demonstrating his versatility and technical expertise. His entrepreneurial spirit emerged early through his involvement in his family business, which provided valuable sales experience, and was further developed when he launched a food delivery venture in Manchester in 2011. Mustafa’s innovative capabilities truly came to the forefront when he personally built the first MishiPay prototype, a achievement that has since been recognized through multiple prestigious awards including UCL’s ‘Bright Ideas’ award, the University of Manchester’s Venture Further award, and the Mayor of London’s International Student award. His exceptional accomplishments culminated in 2019 when he was named to Forbes’ coveted ’30 Under 30′ list, cementing his reputation as a rising star in the technology and innovation space.

Swati Phadke is a seasoned executive who currently serves as CFO and COO of MishiPay, bringing over 12 years of leadership experience across technology companies in software, manufacturing, and retail sectors. Her strategic expertise has been demonstrated through successful execution of several M&A deals, and she has showcased remarkable turnaround capabilities by transforming her previous company from the brink of bankruptcy to a successful multi-million pound exit. Swati’s financial excellence is underscored by her outstanding achievement of ranking 25th among over 200,000 candidates in India’s highly competitive national Chartered Accountant examination. Throughout her career, she has effectively led cross-functional teams across Finance, Marketing, and Partnership development, establishing herself as a versatile executive with a proven track record of driving organizational growth and profitability.

Theo is a dynamic entrepreneur with diverse experience spanning technology, biotechnology, and consumer goods. He co-founded a Mobility Tech startup that was selected by Google for Entrepreneurs and served as operations and strategy advisor for a B2B biotech startup, helping to build and grow the company from the ground up. Theo has also gained corporate experience in Coca-Cola’s marketing activation excellence department, complementing his strong technical foundation with a computer science degree from Stanford University and LSE.
